Interested in Spiritual Direction? What is Spiritual Direction?
Spiritual Direction is a key discipline for Christians for their spiritual development. It is the practice of meeting with a ‘soul friend’ to process one’s inner life with God. A description of spiritual direction from the book Spiritual Direction: A Guide to Giving and Receiving by Gordon T. Smith, 'Spiritual direction is intentional conversation-deliberate and purposeful-about one thing in particular; the work of the Spirit.... it has a very clear agenda; directing our thoughts and the movements of our hearts toward God and the presence of God in our lives.
A spiritual director offers spiritual guidance and companionship to help us make sense of our faith journey, interpret with us the significant markers on the road, and encourage us, particularly through the more difficult transitions and valleys of our pilgrimage. Most of all, a spiritual director helps us make sense of the witness of the Spirit-assisting us to respond well to the question, ‘How is God present to me and how is God, through the ministry of the Spirit, at work in my life.' Chapter 1, Section 1
Practically what does spiritual direction look like?
-Meeting with a spiritual director once a month for 60 minutes (scheduled in advance). This can be done in person or by phone or skype/hangouts/face time.
-Initially making a six-month commitment to the spiritual direction relationship to assess if this ministry is meaningful in ways that lead to increased spiritual growth.
-For the spiritual direction appointment, the person under direction (called the directee) brings something to process concerning their spiritual life. Sometimes it helps to look into one’s prayer life. Is it meaningful, personal? Why or why not? What are the primary emotions to determine where God is at work? Some people journal in advance so they have a clear sense of what needs attention.
-There is no formula for the sessions. These times together will involve sharing, listening, praying and times of silence as the director and directee listen together to God. The goal is to discover what God is saying and doing in the directee’s life, how is Jesus seeking to reveal himself through the experiences of life. And then, to seek to surrender to His love.
